LEAKED: Microsoft Retail Store Concept Sketch!

Microsoft Retail Store Concept Sketches

You heard it months ago: Microsoft plans to open retail stores. Why? Because Apple has stores. But Microsoft surely has selling stuff and other business-y goals in mind too.

Well, you won't need to wait the few weeks (?) remaining before launch to get a peek inside the MS retail experience. This site has acquired a leaked concept sketch, believed to represent one possible configuration (if not necessarily the one shoppers will see). Take a look!

Mmm, mall-licious!

Okay, so they've got the desire, they've got the money, and now we know they've got the plans on paper. But retail's not easy, even if those fruit guys make it look so. The question we're all asking: Does Microsoft have the competence to pull this off?

Never fear! Remember, these are the folks behind Windows Vista, the Zune, and the many recent high-profile Windows ad campaigns. Living proof that if there's one thing these people abound in, it's in competence.

The next salvo

Because a day without negative Zune press would be a day without laughter.

And what does Microsoft itself have to say about the Zune disaster? Let the mewling begin:

More negative Zune press (is there any other kind?)

I go away for a few days, come back to work, and as expected, Microsoft's stillborn wonder is still tanking/sinking/exploding/etc. BUT, whereas I half expected the Zune to be GONE by now, I'm instead seeing two signs of unnatural life:

1) On the Amazon lists, the "top-selling" Zune (Black) continues to float around the #20 spot among music players, and in the #60-80 range among all electronics. Pathetic, yes, but it's still bobbing – it's the one that didn't get flushed the first time.

Billy Wonka slips shoppers a big pink surprise

No, it's not a golden ticket to the magical Zune Factory to see cubicles full of really depressed Oompa Loompas. Rather, you might rip open your Zune box (Packaging By Apple, Whether They Know It Or Not) to find not the chocolatey-brown bar you expected, but a shocking pink Zune! Yes, that's the color. Microsoft wasn't out to copy the iPod after all; its goal was to create a giant pink Good 'n' Plenty. And it succeeded, with only minor differences. (The main one: a few people like Good 'n' Plentys.)
